Breaking the Gender Barriers in the media project was awarded to the Women Journalists Association of the Gambia (WoJAG) representing women journalists under the umbrella body of the Gambia Press Union (GPU). The implementation of the project was done in collaboration with the GPU and the over-sighting coordination of the Gambia National Commission for UNESCO. The project had an implementation timeline of nine months from September 2018 to May 2019. As part of the implementation strategy, the Media Academy for Journalism and Communication (MAJAC) developed a comprehensive curriculum for the delivery of the 6 months training package (hyperlink to the curriculum).
The project had the following deliverables:
- The project supported the training of 20 women journalists for 6 months on mainstream media reporting with focus on both online and offline platforms.
- Trained 20 media reporters, editors, chief editors and publishers on responsible journalism
- 40 journalists sensitised on sexual harassment in the media
- Developed and validated a sexual harassment bill for the media
